Fun with Photoshop (and Lightroom 2!)
February 21st, 2009I shot this one photo of Sam during her maternity session last weekend and really, really liked it! I mean the lighting was off, the angle is waaaay past 11 & 1 (I’ll explain that later, if you like), and the cropping could be better. But I just loved her expression. So I decided to see what I could do to it in Photoshop CS3 & Lightroom 2. Here are some of the results. Let me know which one is your favorite!
The above photo is done in Photoshop with The Pioneer Woman’s “Seventies” action.
This photo was also done in Photoshop with The Pioneer Woman’s “Dim the Lights” and “Boutwell’s Magic Glasses” from the Totally Rad Actions group.
This is a Lightroom 2 creation called “Aged Photo.”
This is “Antique Grayscale” from Lightroom 2.
Here we have “Black & White Low Contrast” from Lightroom 2.
This one’s different for me. It’s called “Cold Tone” from LR2.
And lastly from Lightroom 2 is “Sepia.”
So, take a look, think hard, and go with your gut. Which is your favorite?

I think the third one down, Lightroom Two Aged Photo, is my favorite. And all the pics are amazing. Thank you soooo much!!!

I like the one with “Dim the Lights” and “Boutwell’s Magic Glasses” and the one with “Aged Photo”. I can’t decide which one I like better.

I think Sepia is my favorite – but the picture itself is beautiful in all of them. Great work as always!

I really like the retro look of the top photo. I guess that is why it is called “seventies.”

I came here by googling “seventies” and “photoshop”… I was looking for this kind of effect for my photos… and in fact, the top one is my favorite!

p.s. by the way, I also prefer the cut in the first photo. It absolutely makes sense to make the father appear without his head, like in the first version, but in the others his presence (and half hand) seems a bit wrong to me, and you don’t perfectly see she’s pregnant. Just an opinion. Keep the good work, the photo is great!
